Aircraft Parts and Relics

WWII aircraft crash relic or possibly bomb casing.

Just unearthed this from a box which contained other identified crash relics and aircraft parts, instruments, etc. Unfortunately this piece was not identified, but perhaps someone is able to recognize it? It may be an aircraft part from a crash or a piece of shrapnel from a bomb or missile casing. It measures approx. 7" x 4" (18cm x 10cm) is made from steel (magnetic) and painted dark green or black. The attached "strap" of metal rotates. It is very sharp and has a jagged edge that could only have been caused by some kind of catastrophic  action, such as an explosion. Great conversation piece!

RAF Air Ministry spec. plate for the P.8 Magnetic Aircraft Compass.

Small aluminium data plate, 1.5" x 0.75", stamped P.8 and bearing the stores ref. number 6A/468 for the P.8 compass, as fitted in Spitfires, Hurricanes and most early RAF fighter aircraft. Great condition as a display on its own or if you happen to have a compass with the spec. plate missing. Has been attached and has holes for rivets. Great condition.

Piece of plexiglas windshield from a B-25 Mitchell bomber battle damaged in North Africa.

Nice piece of Plexiglas, approximately 7" x 6" (18cm x 15cm) which was brought back as a souvenir and later donated to a private museum which closed several years ago. Sadly there is no other history except that it was salvaged from a B-25 Mitchell bomber in North Africa and donated by Mr. J. Lucas. An interesting souvenir nonetheless and would make a good display - perhaps mounted over a photo of a B-25.

German Luftwaffe auto canon shell (inert) as fired from flak guns and canon fitted in Messerschmitt Bf109 aircraft.

Very rare to find these on the loose. Original but inert casing and projectile for 20mm German Auto Cannon. Used on Bf109s and Flak Guns. Nicely marked on the base and offered in good condition. 200mm  (8") in length. The Flak 30 (Flugabwehrkanone 30) and improved Flak 38 were 20 mm anti-aircraft guns used by various German forces throughout World War II. It was not only the primary German light anti-aircraft gun, but by far the most widely produced German artillery piece of the war. A variety of models were built, notably the Flakvierling 38 which combined four Flak 38 autocannons on a single carriage. Shows wear and pitting and has been lacquered for display. Great item.

RAF demonstration instrument panel with working lights and all original Air Ministry instruments and switches.

A work of art as much as anything, this fantasy partial panel is based on instruments you would find in a Spitfire, as well as other RAF aircraft. Handmade by a US veteran who does this as a hobby it is made from from maple wood and beautifully finished with orange shellac. It is fully wired and includes a 120v cord and plug so it will plug into any household outlet. The cockpit light, mounted top front, has a dimmer switch included. All instruments and switches are authentic WWII RAF issue with correct Air Ministry markings. A wonderful conversation piece.

RAF Gyro Gunsight Camera Recorder Mk2.

Used on later Marks of Spitfire, as well as Mustangs, Hurricanes, Corsairs, Thunderbolts,  Typhoons, Tempests, Mosquitoes and numerous other aircraft, both during and after the war. It also saw use in early jets such as the Meteor, Vampire, P-80, F-86 and F-100.  the Mk 2 Gyro Gunsight was considered an improvement over the Reflector gunsight used in the Battle of Britain.  This is the film recording unit which plugs in to the Gyro Gun Sight Mk 2 and still has a film cartridge installed (no guarantees if it has been used or if the images would be any good!). Nonetheless a great piece for display with a Gyro Gun Sight and in very good condition, well marked.

Pacific war aircraft relic 3. Piece of shrapnel from a bombing raid by a Japanese "Betty" bomber.

A small piece of shrapnel, 3" long, gathered after a bombing raid on American ships during the invasion of Okinawa. Though small this is dense and heavy so is probably a piece of the bomb casing designed to inflict maximum injury. An interesting relic well worth researching and displaying in a Pacific War collection.
