RFC issue Mk II Goggle Mask by Triplex.

Untouched, original example of the Mk II Goggle Mask, supplied by Air Ministry contract to pilots and crewmen of the RFC and RNAS from 1917. Clear lenses, blackened alloy frames, leather facemask and elastic strap. The hinge where the frames fold in the centre has separated, but could perhaps be repaired (although they display just fine as is) and apart from that these are in very good condition. The cloth surrounding the frames is intact and undamaged; the lenses are clear; the strap is in one piece although it has lost its elasticity; and the leather is in very good condition. As is usually the case, the fur backing has moulted, but the skin is perfectly fine. Excellent clear gold embossed markings and "A" over broad arrow marking on frame.

ULTRA RARE Australian Military Forces escape compass uniform button.

A blackened brass service dress uniform button with an outline of Australia and the words "Australian Military Forces" and a King's crown. Maker marked to the rear J. Gaunt, London. The back unscrews with a traditional right-hand thread (which was used until the enemy discovered these concealed compasses, at which point MI9 reversed the thread to left-hand). Small compasses hidden in  uniform buttons are among the most popular escape items for collectors, and all are considered rare. However this particular example is believed to be one of the rarest, with only two examples known to exist, of which this is one.

RAAF or RNZAF or possibly privately purchased flying gloves.

A recent find in New Zealand, stored along with other flying kit. These beautifully made leather gauntlets look like a cross between RAF 1941 pattern gauntlets and the Type D gauntlets, with an elasticized wrist and a wide gusset, but no zip fastener. Made from high-quality, soft and supple leather, the glove section is lined with blanket fleece and the gauntlet reinforced with a second layer of leather (similar to RAF 1941 pattern). Marked only with the size number (7) and quite small. A near perfect matched pair, in excellent condition, they appear to have never been worn.

WWII US Navy M-1944 Flying Goggles with box.

Very good pair of M-1944 goggles, issued as general purpose but also worn by pilots and aircrews. This example is USN marked and dated 1945, and comes in its original issue box, labeled with USN contract code. Interestingly, the box also contains an extra lens for the B-8 goggles (which were interchangeable with the M-1944) wrapped in the cloth pouch for Polaroid 1021 goggles! It demonstrates beautifully how pilots - especially naval pilots on carriers - had to improvise and scrounge from time to time. Very good used condition, the rubber nice and pliable and the clear lens showing slight yellowing with age.

AAF Type A-9 Flying Helmet, size medium.

The very basic summer weight flying helmet with which the US Army Air Corps entered WWII. A simple, unlined OD cotton skull cap with a leather chin strap wrapped in shearling, with shearling pads on the inside to cover the ears and webbing patches sewn to the outside securing hooks to which the A-9 and A-10 Standard oxygen mask would then be attached. It also has drawstring cords for tightening the brow and nape. These helmets were intended to fit very tightly and therefore sizes tend to run on the small side. This is a size medium which is actually quite generous. It has the addition of webbing tapes with snaps mounted so that a later A-10A or A-14 oxygen mask may be worn. It has a small tear at the back where the cotton fabric has separated but apart from that looks to be unissued or unworn. While once considered very common, like everything else, these are beginning to dry up.

Extremely rare Royal Flying Corps first issue "rubber frame" flying goggles.

The first goggles issued to RFC pilots and observers, from 1913 to 1915. While officers were required to provide their own flying kit, other ranks were given standard issue kit. These rubber frame goggles are in amazing condition–the rubber is still soft and supple and even the rubber strap still has the ability to stretch (it has one slight kink but is still all in one piece). Excellent clear glass lenses. There are 3 patent dates moulded into the rubber at the bridge: July 30, 07; June 16, 08; and March 20, 09.  Box is contemporary with the goggles but not the original box as issued (used for storage and protection). An amazing find.

Very scarce RAF helmet internal wiring loom/cord Type 2186 for use in Type C, D and E helmets with American ANB-H-1 receivers.

Unlike the American made T-42 and T-44 wiring looms, this is the British made low-impedance wiring cord Type 2186 specifically for installing US ANB-H-1 receivers and fitting into either RAF or Fleet Air Arm flying helmets. These were for use by the RAF for flying US aircraft types such as P-51, P-47 etc. and by Fleet Air Arm helmets pilots flying Hellcats, Wildcats, Corsairs and Avengers among other aircraft. Has posts instead of loops to enable installation of ANB-H-1 receivers. A very scarce cord in excellent condition complete with ANB-H-1 receivers, mask microphone socket and RAF bell plug. Lacks rubber coating on one terminal.

Extremely rare RCAF SD uniform tunic escape button compass.

One of the rarest and perhaps most sought after of all Clayton Hutton's ingenious escape items is the Service Dress uniform tunic button containing a compass. RAF examples are extremely rare but Commonwealth examples are considerably harder to find. This RCAF button is a true rarity. It is an early example, featuring a standard right hand thread (later examples utilized a left hand thread after the enemy discovered the ruse). It also features the early disk-style compass with 4 holes. Completely undetectable unless an attempt is made to unscrew the back. Patterned on a standard gilt uniform button by J. R. Gaunt.

RARE numbered Auxiliary Air Force lapel pin.

Another often overlooked and quite iconic Battle of Britain piece. The Auxiliary Air Force existed to provide the RAF with pilots, mostly trained at their own expense, by flying at weekends at flying clubs such as Brooklands. It was eventually awarded the Royal Charter and became the Royal Auxiliary Air Force, but those who joined in its formative days will have proudly worn this badge on their weekday clothes. The auxiliaries of course went on to form the backbone of many fighter squadrons during the Battle of Britain and the rest is history. Appears to be silver but not marked. A very scarce and important badge.

RAF 1943 Pattern Flying / Escape Boots in fabulous condition and marked size 12.

The cleanest and best looking pair of these popular flying boots I have come across in a long, long time. They look as though they may have been been worn once, judging by the wear on the leather soles,  but show no use on the uppers whatsoever. The Lightning zips work smoothly and the leather shoe section has absolutely no wear or scrapes. Suede upper boots section is perfect and the sheepskin linings are immaculate. The small, concealed pocket for hiding the escape knife is visible on the lining of the right boot, but the opening for inserting the knife had never been cut!  Marked as a size 12, they are also an unusually large size. For the collector who wants flying clothing in the best possible condition, this pair would be very difficult to upgrade.

Scarce RAF Type D mask hose connector Mk IIIB.

Never a common item, these connectors have now become almost impossible to find, perhaps as scarce as the masks themselves. This is a lovely used example in great condition, the spring release works perfectly and it swivels within the hood just as it is supposed to. It is well marked with a broad arrow and stores ref. date 6D/101, Mk IIIB*. The inlet has 6-holes. It still has a segment of original black rubber hose attached with two rows of linen whipcord.  A rare but must-have accessory for any Battle of Britain display.

Internally wired Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Type C helmet.

Lovely example of a wartime issue second pattern (internally wired) Fleet Air Arm Type C flying helmet, complete with its telephone receivers, full-length cord (loom), microphone connector and bell-shaped plug. Receivers are fitted in rubber housings that include capped inlet ports for Gosport tubes and have sponge rubber pads in place. Leather is clean and supple, chamois lining is clean, showing light use and has the name "S. Payne" printed in characteristic block lettering as used by the Royal Navy. chin strap has full elasticity and  the helmet is a generous size 2. The wiring is fully internal, with the "three-tab" rear favoured by collectors as being earlier wartime production. There is an embossed stamp on the right-hand chin area which is partly indistinct, but NIV can be clearly discerned (Not In Vocabulary - the standard Air Ministry stores reference for all non-RAF issue flying clothing).

1945 dated and named  RAF Warrant Officer's peaked cap made in Bangalore, India.

This is quite a find! Beautifully tailored RAF officer's quality cap in blue barathea, with a black mohair band fitted with a Warrant Officer's cap badge. Named on the label to W/O J.T. Wardale, with the date 1945, the hat has a superb diamond shaped linen label printed with The Services Tailoring House, Commercial Street, Bangalore. Dark brown leather sweatband and velvet brow pad, black cotton liner and patent leather chin strap. There is one small hole on the underside of the peak which doesn't show on display and a very tiny snag on the mohair, just left of the badge. Showing light use, this is a very scarce uniform item and the label makes it very special,

RARE RAF Type C helmet fitted with guide plates for the Mk IV goggles.

Very hard to find variant of the early Type C helmet, far less common the Type B (despite the fact that the Mk IV goggles were actually designed with the Type C helmet in mind). This helmet, which is unmarked (most likely any embossed markings are under the lower guide plate) appears to be a size 3 and comfortably fits a display head. Leather is in excellent condition with slight scuffing to the front left brow area but no damage. Rubber ear cups are nice and pliable; chin strap and Bennett buckle complete. Clean chamois lining. When I obtained the helmet it had later chamois donuts glued in place. I had these carefully removed and replaced with the correct, original chamois rings from a donor helmet, so it is now restored to its full glory using all original components. Named inside in two places to R. Stewart, with a service number. A lovely example of a scarce variant.

RAF Type C internally-wired second pattern, later war model with extra tabs to the rear. Large size 3.

Very nice used RAF Type C of the second pattern, internally wired. This is the later variant (presumed) with extra tabs to the rear to enable the wiring cord to be mounted partly externally for ease of maintenance. This style of "part-in-part-out" wiring was first announced in December 1944 with the second pattern Types D and E helmets. Helmet is in good condition, the leather being soft and supple except for a couple of minor nicks and one small area to the right central panel which appears to have some minor heat damage, although this isn't a serious detraction and doesn't even show too much on display. The chamois lining has a few nicks and tears but again, this is superficial. Rubber is excellent, and a wartime internal wiring loom (connector Type 2091) is fitted, along with Type 32 receivers and correct microphone jack and bell plug. Cord retains its Air Ministry marked paper label. A very nice helmet in a great large size which displays well. Price based upon the small detractions.

Early wartime RAF officer's peaked cap.

Excellent used example of an RAF officer's cap dating from the late 1930s or early WWII, featuring the green rippled "under-peak" typical of the type worn by officers during the Battle of Britain. Nice overall shape with the stiffener removed to give a slightly crushed look, lovely bullion badge, narrow patent leather chin strap and silk covered buttons. No maker label remains to the ribbed black satin lining. Slightly dusty perhaps but no damage at all, no mothing, good leather sweatband. Very good example.

Stunning Luftwaffe officer's summer white top visor cap.

This Luftwaffe officer's white top summer cap is simply stunning - and typical of the style worn during the hot summer of 1940 by fighter pilots based in France.  Fabulous shape, showing the crushed look by removing the stiffeners from inside, and showing just enough use and wear to have "been there" - but no damage or excessive wear. Well padded white top is detachable for washing. Beautiful, heavy aluminium bullion wire wreath and cockade, with wire eagle on white backing. Correct twisted aluminium wire chin cords. Grey leather sweatband, white satin lining and good diamond sweat-shield with maker's information. Made in Berlin and most likely cost a fortune. Highly desirable - an absolute beauty.

Dog tag belonging to Battle of Britain ace Harold Bird-Wilson, together with his later Bauch and Lomb sunglasses.

Battle of Britain Ace Harold Bird-Wilson enjoyed a long and illustrious career in the RAF. Besides being an ace fighter pilot, he was also one of the earliest "Guinea Pigs" of Dr. Achibald McIndoe and later in the war became one of the first jet pilots. In September 1940 his partrait was drawn by Cuthbert Orde a few days before being shot down by Adolf Galland! In 1944 he was sent to Leavenworth in the USA for command training, returning to lead his wing during the D-Day operations. Undoubtedly he acquired these early Bauch and Lomb anti-glare "aviator" sunglasses from his US connections. Still in their leather case in which he has written his name (first in red ink then in blue) the case also contains one of his dog tags named to Bird-Wilson and dated 1938. The glasses have a small chip in one lens but are otherwise in good, used condition. These items were auctioned by his family several years ago together with some other personal items (not available) and a copy of the auction invoice is included for provenance.

AAF Type A-8 Winter Flight Trousers with braces/suspenders.

Far less common than the A-9 and A-11 flight pants, these A-8 trousers are seldom found. They were quilted and padded for cold weather and high altitude flying. This pair is in absolutely immaculate condition, and appear to have never been worn. They are also a super large size 38. OD green waterproofed cotton outer with heavy quilting and a cotton lining; two patch pockets on the thighs, two more on the back of the seat  and two zipped pockets on the lower legs below the knees. In addition to the woven spec. label, these are well marked the AAF winged star property stamp. Included are the original braces/suspenders with correct attachments for the buttons. These are also in impeccable, unused condition.
