4 x uncut Eagle Squadron patches from the 1942 Hollywood movie production, plus original photo from Universal Studios.
A fantastic find for Eagle Squadron collectors or movie memorabilia collectors. 4 uncut Eagle Squadron patches made for the film "Eagle Squadron" in 1942, starring Robert Stack. Almost identical to those made in England for Eagle Squadron pilots, these are directly embroidered onto correct wartime RAF uniform barathea wool. In studying still images of the film, it can clearly be seen that these are the correct film prop patches (see photos showing close up: besides the overall look and shape of the eagle, the right hand thigh/shank of the eagle is longer than the left). These were obtained from Universal Studios, many years ago, together with the original 8” x 10” photo print of the Disney artwork and press release to the back, all included with the sale.

Pacific war aircraft relic 3. Piece of shrapnel from a bombing raid by a Japanese "Betty" bomber.

A small piece of shrapnel, 3" long, gathered after a bombing raid on American ships during the invasion of Okinawa. Though small this is dense and heavy so is probably a piece of the bomb casing designed to inflict maximum injury. An interesting relic well worth researching and displaying in a Pacific War collection.

RARE original D-Day US Army Paratrooper's ID armband / brassard.
Primarily associated with US paratroops landing in occupied Europe on June 6, 1944, the armband provided instant recognition for the local population. These were also worn by other troops serving in occupation zones. Original examples are now quite rare and numerous copies exist. This is a genuine wartime armband printed on oilcloth with punched holes for pinning around the upper arm. Some age discolouration and creasing, flaking at the folds but colours are bright. Overall a very good example.

Iconic RAF Type B helmet with Type D oxygen mask and Type E microphone assembly.
Speaking of "Holy Grail" items! A complete and original RAF headgear set from the 1939-1940 era as used i the Battle of France and Britain. Type B helmet is in great condition, size 1 but generously cut and fits a standard male feature display head just perfectly. No label but a nice crisp A-crown-M stamp inside. Helmet appears unissued - leather is soft and chamois lining exceptionally clean, all buckles intact and leather zip pullers present. Fitted with an original Type D mask in similar condition, showing almost no wear, but has evidently had some issues with mothing to the outer wool and has been restored/repaired to fill the holes. The restored area is confined to one area on the left hand side and some smaller areas under the chin, but is done in a way that is almost invisible from more than 2 feet away. The whole display looks stunning. The mask is fitted with a superb Type C microphone and Q cord (Type E microphone assembly) with receivers installed in the helmet. The rarity of this amazing set cannot be overstated.

Scarce RAF Beadon Suit whet stone (sharpening stone).
One of the more obscure and difficult to find survival items that was issued as part of the Beadon Suit equipment is this whet stone, used for sharpening knives and blades. This example appears to have had a little use though it is not damaged in any way. Measures 4" long by 0.25"" square.

Length of braided flexible tubing for use on RAF Type D mask.
This is a very old length of flexible tubing which looks the part on a D mask and fits perfectly, but is made of a grey synthetic material. The braided cotton covering - black with a faded yellow fleck - is a near perfect match for that seen on D masks (better than most of the later reproductions). The actual length of the D mask hose was 60" - this measures a little longer (approx. 70") but could be cut down or used as is. Makes a perfect display at a fraction of the cost of an original!

RFC Cowl type flying helmet modified to a standard open face / Mk I pattern helmet.

Lovely example of the Royal Flying Corps cowl type hood converted to a more conventional open face helmet, similar to the Mk I. This was a fairly common modification among pilots who found the cowl somewhat cumbersome and restrictive – though few are found these days and seldom in such great condition. The leather is glove soft and the interior retains about 80% of its fur. This is modified form a very quality helmet and, in typical style, leaving the wind-deflecting pads, ear flaps and brow straps in place. An extra strap has been added to the right hand side, perhaps to secure goggles or a mask of some type? The chin strap has been reattached to provide a secure fastening under the chin.

Unissued AAF Type A-11 flying helmet, large size.
A perfect example of the standard issue intermediate flying helmet for AAF pilots and aircrews from 1943. This is the earier model with 3 snaps/press studs on each side for attaching the mask. The leather is superb and the creamy chamois lining is completely clean and soft. Crisp, clear AAF stamp on the outside left hand side and a great label indicating size Large. 1930s-WWII RAF Service Dress Cap for an officer of Air Rank.

Another possible Battle of Britain era item! Very nice early Air Rank officer's service dress peaked cap. High quality blue barathea with patent leather peak and two rows of "scrambled egg" bullion oak leaves. Patent leather chin strap, black mohair band and superb Air Rank cap badge. Air Rank in the RAF is equivalent to General in the Army, so these caps are rare. Some loose stitching on the interior leather sweatband which could easily be restored. No signs of moth. Satin inside the crown is sweat stained making the tailor's name difficult to read. Overall an excellent cap.

Scarce RNZAF Flight Sergeant Bomb Aimer's ID'd and attributed tunic with history.

Royal New Zealand Air Force other ranks service dress jacket, early pattern with faux French cuffs, ID'd and complete with history of the Bomb Aimer who wore it. He trained in Canada and the Bomb Aimer brevet is a typical Canadian made curved wing with the letters RCAF carefully unpicked! New Zealand shoulder tabs/eagles are sewn in place indicating he served overseas. Flight sergeant stripes and crowns installed on both sleeves. The tunic was tailored in New Zealand and has the desirable French cuffs. The label, though faded, indicates its early manufacture date of 1941. It is ID'd by the owner's service/serial number printed inside the top of the right sleeve. Some areas of mothing on the left shoulder have been professionally repaired/rewoven and do not detract. This originally came from the family and includes and extensive folder full of in-depth research on the owner from the NZDF archives: Archie Allan Ewart Rogers trained in Canada and England and flew with 159 squadron from September 1944-May 1945. There is no belt on the tunic (it has been tailored without the hooks) but a correct other ranks' belt can be provided at additional cost.

RAF Dual Purpose flying suit (Harnessuit) by GQ - early manufacture and issue date.
Very nice early example of the GQ Dual Purpose flying suit, developed by the Irving Air Chute company as the "Harnessuit". It housed both a parachute harness and flotation device, and was adaptable as a seat-type or observer (chest type) parachute, either of which could be clipped to the built-in hardware on the suit. As with most of these suits, the hardware has long since been removed and there is no internal harness fitted. However it does retain the housing for the inflatable stole (bladder) often missing, secured by brass buttons. There are two very small holes in the side where the metal slide fitting for the seat parachute cable was seated, and one very small area where the stitching on the seam at the side has separated - no damage to the fabric - and this would be a simple repair. Of interest is the early contact/manufacture date of 1939 and the early acceptance stamp of June 1940 (most I have seen are dated September or October). Also of note is the fact that it utilizes parts from the earlier combination flying suit in blue grey fabric suggesting that wartime austerity practices were already in place this early. Overall a very good and quite unusual example of this very popular flying suit which would lend itself well to a full restoration.

Original set of RAF kapok pads for the 1941 Pattern Life Vest.

Superb set of original wartime kapok pads for the 1941 Pattern Life Vest. These are getting harder to find and even though they are not usually seen, are so much better than using the reproductions. Cotton shell stuffed with teased kapok providing extra buoyancy to the stole/bladder such that, in the event the stole was damaged, the kapok would support the downed airman for several hours. Very well marked and overall very clean with minor storage marks.

RAF Mk IA jet helmet "bone dome" ID'd and with 33 squadron decal.
Customized Mk IA jet pilot's crash helmet or "bone dome" as they are called in RAF parlance. 1971 dated helmet named to Oram of 33 squadron, stationed at RAF Odiham. 33 squadron has an illustrious history as a fighter squadron, and in 1971 it became the first RAF unit equipped with the Puma helicopter. Overall good condition with some natural service wear. The green paint has some slight scuffs and chips and the edge rubber has a couple of worn areas at the front edges. Good visor and mechanism, good chin strap and reflective tape on back/top is still intact. Clean lining. A solid helmet with a great decal on the left side depicting the Hart's head emblem of 33 squadron. Not common to find good attributed or decorated RAF helmets and this example displays well.

Original and extremely rare USAF K-1 Pressure helmet.

One of the rarest and most sought after items of flying headgear dating from the Cold War and used in aircraft such as the U-2. Pressure helmets were produced in extremely small quantities, at great expense, and were custom fitted to the individual. This example has been customized either during or after its USAF life by painting it red and adding a clenched first/thumbs up emblem and several MLB baseball team logos. Helmet shell and inner helmet are 100% original and in very good condition. the thin rubber facial seal is perfect. Chamois pads are all in great, clean condition, though the sponge padding is a little stiff in a few places. The helmets are incredibly difficult to find and the faceplates almost impossible (most were destroyed to prevent accidental suffocation). A replica faceplate is included which is quite convincing from a distance but strictly non-functional. I wonder if this was used as a film prop? Who knows? It would not be difficult to remove the red paint and restore this helmet to USAF display standard - or leave as is for a one-of-a-kind piece. Interior label is dated February 1955. A classic piece of USAF history and the first I have ever been able to offer.

RARE first pattern Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Type N tropical flying helmet.
Sometimes referred to as "Navy version of the RAF Type D" this helmetis correctly identified as Type N (Naval). It was the first flying helmet specifically issued to Fleet Air Arm crews, intended to house both electronic and Gosport communications, so that crews of aircraft such as the Swordfish, Albemarle, etc. could talk to each other while retaining radio silence. It was produced in small batches only and is very scarce to find. This example is in excellent, used condition. Heavy cotton drill with leather fittings, rubber ear cups inside zipped housings, "up-and-down" leather tabs for the goggle strap, leather chin strap with Bennett buckle fastening, and press studs/snaps for the Type D, E, E* or G oxygen mask. It shows very light wear and no damage, just a few marks from storage. Stitching on the leather receiver housing on the left has been reinforced neatly by hand - looks like the work of a rigger. Helmet is named inside in typical RN block letter style, but the ink is very non-distinct. Medium size which comfortably fits a male feature display head.
are well marked inside.

RAF Mk VII flying goggles.

A good used pair of Mk VII flying goggles, the most attractive of the RAF issue (in my opinion!) due to their ultramarine blue painted brass frames retaining about 85-90% original paint. This pair is complete– never cut down as many were, and has good soft leather pads. They are fitted with clear lenses and correct grey webbing elastic strap which has lost most of its elastcitiy but is not stretched out. Frames have a few dings but overall have kept their shape well. A decent pair which will display well.

British made hip flask in pewter, from veteran aircrew member's estate and typical of the type carried by airmen.
Many aircrewmen carried these, though they were not officially "issued' - they were vital to survival in water or in cold regions while evading capture. This has been through the wars, has a few dents and dings though it looks good and remains serviceable. The owner's initials are engraved on the front "F.G.B" - flask is made in Sheffield, England from English pewter and will hold 8oz of brandy, whisky, rum or whatever your preferred survival beverage might be. Would look good with any display of survival kit.

Smaller of two heliographs issued as part of the RAF survival kits. The larger size (4" x 4") was considered the better option and issued with multi-place dinghies. Rare Luftwaffe 3rd pattern hinged Nitsche & Gunther Splitterschuttzbrille goggles with tin case.

A great original used set of N&G anti-splinter goggles, (splitterschutzbrille), designed with curved lenses to deflect small splinters and debris while providing good peripheral vision. Black bakelite plastic frames are hinged to provide a good fit (earlier patterns were moulded in one piece in different sizes and did not fit as well). Condition is very good, with excellent tinted lenses and frames. The ribbed silk strap shows slight wear and soiling from use but still displays well, and the elasticated section at the back still stretches perfectly. Stored in their tin case with embossed nomenclature and FL number and original paper tube inside. Tin has a few dings and dents but has protected the goggles well. Originals are getting very difficult to find.

Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm Type C helmet, internally wired with receivers, cord and plug.

Very good example of the Fleet Air Arm version of the wartime second pattern (internally-wired) Type C helmet. Excellent leather, chamois lining a little grubby, chin strap retains elasticity. Fitted with correct receivers in zipped compartments with smooth functioning zips, with the addition of entry ports for fitting Gosport tubes. Full length cord and both plugs. Light verdigris to press studs. First variant of this type, with 3 goggle strap tabs to the rear. Medium size, textbook example, named inside in typical RN block lettering. These are getting quite difficult to find!

AAF Pilot's Navigation Kit to pilot of 489 BG, 846 BS, 8th AF - complete.
The most complete example of one of these kits I have ever come across, named to Lt. W.S. Buckmaster, 489 BG, 846 BS. Case in very good condition, with some scuffing at the edges, good working zip fastener. Contains owner's photo ID card and printed name tapes; 11 wartime aeronautical charts, mostly east coast plus Pheonix, Detroit, Milwaukee, etc. Additional 5 charts of Asia and the Pacific, Indian Ocean, Philippines, etc plus military street maps of Tokyo and Manila. Owner was in Europe with 489BG and then later in the Pacific. Includes several blank navigation plotting sheets and landing fields/bases. Also includes his "housewife" sewing kit. A full case in great condition with ID which would be well worth further research.
