RAF Type M2 pressure breathing oxygen mask, unissued, still packed in box in perfect condition.

The Type M oxygen mask was the first purpose built pressure breathing mask developed for use in RAF fast/high altitude jets (the Type J being based on the body of the H mask). The first version was made from blue rubber and featured a simply hook fastening on the right hand side. The M2 was moulded in black rubber and had a more complicated spring clip mechanism for attaching to the helmet. This M2 mask is in absolutely pristine condition; removed from its box only for photographing, it still has all its padding, packing and tags attached. The mask is dated 1959 (repacked in 1961 on the box). It was the forerunner of the Type P and Q masks. A rare mask which had a very short service life.

Scully "Air Mail" luxury privately purchased commercial flying helmet, 1930s.

One of, if not the, most luxurious privately purchased flying helmets of the interwar era, c1930. The beautiful Scully "Air Mail" helmet by Scully Bros. of Los Angeles was made from the softest glove leather and lined with butter soft suede. The helmet has elasticated gussets on each side for a snug fit, sturdy copper Gosport pipes and receivers, a rolled leather edge for comfort. Slightly dark staining on one side (looks like it might have been lying in oil at some time) but this looks worse in the pictures than real life and does not affect the feel or quality of the leather – there is no residual oiliness. Great label and large size. Lovely helmet.

RARE First pattern (unwired) Fleet Air Arm Type C helmet – modified from RAF issue.

Often overlooked, this is probably the most scarce of wartime Fleet Air Arm helmets – because it began life as a standard RAF issue Type C helmet (first pattern unwired). The standard rubber ear cups were removed per admiralty order and zipped ear cups previously issued with Type B helmets sewn on instead. This allowed the use of both electronic and Gosport communications to be fitted – vital for Fleet Air Arm torpedo bomber crews who needed to be able to communicate within the aircraft, but could not afford for electronic communications to be intercepted ad give away their location/intent. This helmet has been factory modified, retaining all its original Air Ministry embossed stamps (to the chin strap and both ear-pieces) with the addition of Navy type telephone receiver holders to accommodate Gosport tubes and radio receivers. Interestingly, the helmet was never fitted with forward goggle retaining tabs - indicating it was factory modified prior to its completion for RAF issue. Fantastic condition and a generous size 2 (Medium). This is one of a very small number of factory modified examples I have ever seen and by far the best example. Small blemish to right hand zip runner (looks like something spilled) but this does NOT effect the smooth running of the zip in any way. Includes original correct sponge rubber cushions. A fantastic and very rare helmet.

RAF / RCAF Canadian made "Observer" Type parachute harness by Irvin Air Chute Company, dated March 1943.
Excellent example of the very hard to find Observer type parachute harness (for a chest-type, clip on pack) which were made in Canada and used in every theatre, including ETO and the Pacific. Off white webbing harness is in excellent condition, uncut, well marked to Irvin Air Chute Co, Hamilton, Ontario, and dated 3-1943. Khaki back cusion is similarly maker marked. Hooks for harness are superb, with heavy chrome plating. "Bang-box" is flat sided (as Canadian made examples - and later British types - were, to enable "feel" of the locked position in low visibility conditions). IAC stamp on harness. An absolutely superb example showing light storage marks but no wear or damage.

RAF Type H electrically-heated flying suit liner in perfect, unissued condition.
Absolutely superb, unissued flying suit liner, Type H.. electrically heated — the last of the RAF's electrically heated flying clothing issued during the war. All snap/press-stud connectors are present for either 12v or 24v connection, though it is fitted with a 24v plug (still with stores tag attached). Crisp and clear printed linen label inside. Knit collar is perfect, with no mothing or wear at all. The condition of this suit has to be seen to be believed - it is immaculate and would be virtually impossible to upgrade.

AAF Type A-7 nasal oxygen mask in original box.
Not the most elegant or "sexy" of the early Army Air Corps aircrew oxygen masks, but effective in providing oxygen without interfering with speech/radio communication. The mask fitted over the nose only, leaving the mouth unhindered. Mask is unissued, in its original box wrapped in tissue (label remnants on lid and end of box) and retains its liberal coating of French chalk. Rubber is excellent, fully pliable, including the narrow inlet tube and the head strap, although the rebreather bag (bladder) is brittle, hard and partially fragmented. Replacement bladders are available. Rare piece of often overlooked kit.

Superb Royal Flying Corps officer's plastron-front "Maternity" tunic.

Probably the finest example of a privately-tailored RFC "Maternity" tunic I have ever handled. While the tunic shows just enough use to say "I was there" the overall condition is quite superb. Though there is no tailor's label, it is a lovely, bespoke jacket that would have cost a pretty penny back in the day. Lined with satin throughout, it retains all its original tortoiseshell buttons and press-stud fastenings, as well as bronze collar "dogs" and bronze RFC buttons to each epaulette, and rank pips for a lieutenant. An excellent, genuine pair of silk embroidered RFC pilot wings are sewn to the left breast. There is a small nick on of the feathers, otherwise these are perfect. There are few signs of wear, but no holes and no sign of any insect damage. It would be very, very difficult to find a better, cleaner example.

Superb and extremely rare Royal Flying Corps maternity tunic for other ranks.

Simply stunning example of a Royal Flying Corps maternity tunic of the type worn by other ranks (enlisted). Khaki serge wool tunic with stand up collar and wrap-over plastron front. 100% original and with original embroidered RFC shoulder tabs on black wool field. Flap pockets with buttons, fastens with buttons and hooks-snd-eyes – all present and original to the tunic. Retains 90% of its tailor's label inside the skirt: Made by
Miller Mfg Co. of Toronto. The same information is stamped inside one sleeve and there are other marks which have been obliterated (possibly laundry marks or owner's name). The condition is absolutely stunning, with the lightest signs of wear, and the slightest suggestion that perhaps "pips" were once added to the shoulder straps (a temporary field promotion maybe?). An unmessed with original that would be very difficult to upgrade. Note: pictured with field service cap and webbing belt NOT included.

RAF issue collarless uniform shirt for Other Ranks with collar.
Blue cotton collarless shirt as worn by RAF Other Ranks. Though the standard issue shirt only buttoned half way, full-length opening uniform shirts were definitely available for private purchase and were often worn; that said, this shirt could also be slightly post war, since the collarless shirts remained in inventory until long afterwards. It includes a near perfect matching collar which is wartime A-crown-M marked and fits just right. Serial number inked inside the collar and on the tail. Excellent condition with no damage, only light wear, all original buttons present.

RARE WAAF working dress (BD) blouse dated 1943 with rank stripes for a corporal.
WAAF uniform items are very scarce and difficult to find (the WAAF was, after all, a fraction of the size of the RAF). The working dress (Suits, Working, Serge) or battledress is one of the more difficult items to source. This is an excellent example showing only light wear; there is a tiny blemish/hole to the edge of the fly-front opening and some of the metal buttons have evidently been replaced as they are of two slightly different styles. Apart from that it is in great shape. Corporal's stripes on the right sleeve, as was common on working dress throughout the service. First I have come across in many years.

RAF Mk VIII flying goggles.

Very good pair of Mk VIII goggles showing light use. Probably post war production, my guess would be late 1940s/early 1950s. Same style as wartime with high padded "shoulders" and suede backing to 3-piece cushion. The strap still has elasticity though slightly stretched and grubby with one small hole. Has the nice light leather fittings.

RAF Type D flying helmet, second pattern, internally wired with correct cord/loom and Type 16 telephone receivers.
Very good, clean example of the later war RAF Type D flying helmet issued from December 1944 for desert and tropical wear ("East of Malta" per AMOs). Complete with its correct internal wiring and Type 16 receivers. Helmet is marked as a size 2 (medium) and fits a standard display head comfortably. Shows only light use, no wear or damage. Nice AID stamp and what looks like initials written inside. Good rubber ear cups and elastic in the chin strap. A textbook example.

Early Imperial Japanese Navy summer flying helmet.
A rare early wartime Imperial Japanese Navy flying helmet in outstanding condition - unissued and unworn with minor soiling from storage. Brown leather with an orange velvet lining and a great label. The fold up peak is secured with a wooden button, as is the small strap at the top (copied from European WWI era helmets). The two goggle strap tabs to the rear have no buttons - these were NEVER sewn on! U-shaped pouches are sewn on each side for Gosport or electronic receivers. Rectangular green cotton patch to the rear for the owner to write his name, but since this helmet remained unissued, it is blank. Leather chin strap and leather covered buckle, all in amazing condition. Shown in last 2 photos with goggles listed separately. A fantastic find.

RAF / AAF British made Grow (M-4) anti-flak helmet.

One of the true "Holy Grail" items for collectors of flying helmets. Designed by USAAF senior flight surgeon Col. Malcolm Grow and produced by Wilkinson Sword from overlapping manganese steel plates covered with leather, the helmet was trialed and combat tested in very limited numbers by both AAF and RAF crews. Production was expensive –later examples made in the USA were fabric covered – but it was quickly superseded by the simpler M-3 and M-5 steel helmets. Very few exist today. This example shows definite signs of use but no damage, just a couple of minor worn spots to the leather at the edge of the steel. Fitted with its chin strap ad lift-the-dot fastening. Overall a very good to excellent used example.
Note: shown with A-11 and Type C helmets for demonstration only - these are not included.

RARE variation of the RAF Type E flying helmet, internally wired with scarce Type 2186 cord (for US ANB-H-1 receivers) .
A very scarce variation of the Type E helmet which is fitted with the Type 2186 wiring loom (10H/5229) and ANB-H-1 receivers plus the rare bakelite end-caps for noise attenuation. These wiring looms were installed in Type C, D and E wired helmets for use with US radios in lend-lease aircraft operated by both the RAF and Fleet Air Arm. Helmet shows use but no wear or damage and is a large size (3 or 4). The end caps alone are extremely rare. The wiring still retains its coated linen tag with instructions. A very rare find.

RAF First Pattern (unwired) Type D flying helmet.
Lovely example of the very scarce first pattern, unwired (requires an external Q cord), Type D flying helmet, issued "East of Malta" for RAF pilots and crews in desert and tropical regions from 1942 on. Tan cotton drill with a satin lining, large rubber ear cups with a separate, oval rubber noise attenuating cover, leather chin strap and Bennett's buckle. Press studs to accommodate the D and E type mask. Helmet is in great condition, showing light to moderate use but no damage. RARE RAF theatre-made microphone carrier mask with Type 28 mic. assembly.
A great deal of improvisation occurred at the more distant, out-of-the-way RAF bases where supplies were limited. Much flying was at low level and oxygen not required, so improvised masks, designed to hold only a microphone, were locally made from approved patterns (at least on a local/regional basis, even though no official stores ref. records exist). Examples of this pattern are mostly found in the far east and Australia. Constructed from heavy canvas with a linen lining and stiffener in between, with press stud fastenings for a B or early D helmet. It is fitted with a Type 28 carbon microphone assembly, including Q cord and Type 32 receivers. Small piece of the bakelite microphone housing is broken/missing but this is inside the mask and does not affect function or display. Press studs have been moved so possibly reissued.

US navy NAF1092 flying helmet, ID'd. Large size and great condition.

Lovely example of the standard issue US Navy and US Marine Corps intermediate flying helmet form the late 1930s until about 1943-44. Goatskin leather with chamois lining and chamois lined chin cup. Manufactured by Slote and Klein to Naval Aircraft factory contact specs. Helmet has a name and serial number to the inside of the brow/peak of J.T. Pope and CF1. Size 7-1/4 with an unusual early sewn chin cup. No earcups for receivers ever sewn on, but it is stamped in the back "USN". Not an uncommon helmet, but ID'd examples are always nice.

AAF / USN AN6530
flying goggles.
Very good used pair of the classic American flying goggles of WWII, worn by the AAF and the USN. Standardized as AN6530 in 1943 (previously known as B-7) these goggles feature plated brass frames, a one-piece rubber cushion with chamois backing and a white elastoc strap. This pair is fitted with acetate lenses – a practice adopted for pilots in training as a result of injuries from broken glass after a heavy landing. Frames are good, no dents or dings just minor surface oxidation; good soft cushion with clean chamois; clear acetate lenses with minor scratches, good strap retaining most elasticity.

AAF Electrically-heated gloves for the F-2 and F-3 flying suit.

Superb pair of AAF flying gloves, electrically0-heated, for use wit the F-2 and F-3 suits. Fantastic condition dark brown leather with the distinction of one finger (ring finger, left hand) being a completely different colour - reddish brown! These were made that way - have not been altered at all. Good labels in both gloves. These may be unissued - certainly it would be hard to find a bgetter pair.

Cold War era RAF Group Captain's peaked cap.
RAF Group Captain's service dress peaked cap from the early postwar years (after 1952) having a cap badge with the "Queen's Crown." Otherwise identical to the WWII types. A beautiful cap and still quite rare since this version of the officer's cap, with a single row of gold bullion "scrambled egg" on the peak, was only worn by Group Captains. Excellent condition with little wear and no damage, the only issue being a couple of small tears to the interior oilcloth lining. Tailored by Herbert Johnson of New Bond Street. Lovely patina to the bullion on the heavily padded badge as well as the peak. Patent leather chin strap and peak with green underside.

RAAF other ranks' sidecap with bronzed badge. Good size, 1943 dated and named.

The distinctive dark blue RAAF uniforms are far more scarce than the standard blue-grey worn by the RAF and other Commonwealth air forces. This is a lovely worn example of the sidecap/forage cap, complete with bronzed badge and black plastic buttons. One small repair to left hand side at the back which is barely visible. Good label with multiple names written on, printed date of 1943 overprinted with 1944 — worth researching.

Scarce WWII USAAF Flight Surgeon's gold 2" shirt wing by Amico and matching collar devices.

The Flight Surgeon's qualification wing was the only AAF wing produced in gold, which proved unpopular and was quickly replaced by the same badge in sterling silver. This is the 2" shirt sized wing by Amico in gold plated sterling silver. A beautiful, two-piece construction wing which shows a nice patina and comes with a matched pair of gilt medical branch collar devices. Sold as a set.

AAF radio/headset extension cord.
Extension cord for the HS-38 headset as fitted in all AAF flying helmets from 1943 on (also the HB-7 headband). The red PL-354 plug goes into the JK-26 jack with the other end plugging into the aircraft radio. This is a long extension (6 feet) to allow the crew member to move around in the aircraft, so most probably for a crew position on a heavy bomber. The rubber coated cord and both plugs are in perfect condition.
