RARE set of RAF Mk VI spectacles, issued to pilots and aircrews to cut through haze when flying over water. Rigid, translucent green plastic frames with laminated glass polarizing lenses and elastic strap, soft chamois pad over the bridge of the nose. Personalized first edition of one of the classic books on early WWII RAF fighter pilots, "Squadrons Up" by Noel Monks.

Squadrons Up was written early in the war and  published at the beginning of what we now call the Battle of Britain. It features stories about the men who flew in the Battle of France and focuses on 73 squadron and its iconic New Zealander "Cobber" Kain, the first "Ace" in the RAF. This book was given as a Christmas gift by one of the WAAF nurses who was stationed at Kirton in Lindsey, and who knew these brave men. She attached three personal photographs of the personnel of 73 squadron, including "Doc" Outfin, Cobber Kain and several other notable RAF pilots. Kain was killed in June, 1940 so photos of him are quite scarce and this is a superb piece of history.  Noel Monks was the Daily Mail War Correspondent who was "embedded" with the RAF in France and the book itself is highly regarded - but this unique personalized edition is a wonderful piece of history with its own intrinsic value. No dust jacket and has a scorch mark to front cover but otherwise nice tight binding and very good condition.

Cased 1940s era Carl Zeiss 8 x 30 binoculars.

Carl Zeiss Deltrintem 8 x 30 binoculars with original fitted leather case. Though not military marked, these are WWII era binoculars and exactly the type that would be used by Luftwaffe and other branches of the military while observing enemy activity from the ground; perhaps by observers in aircraft - and almost certainly for hunting (as they were encouraged to do). The German firm of Zeiss offered the best optics available and these binoculars still function superbly. Show use, some paint chips etc. but glass and optics are still excellent. Fitted case is serial numbered inside S-2448. Case lacks strap and leather covering on springs of clasp is gone, otherwise excellent. Binoculars have their strap attached.

Hand powered friction operated torch / flashlight.

One of several styles of these handy torches issued and privately purchased for emergency use during escape or evasion in enemy territory, on board aircraft or submarines etc. Black bakelite body with steel operating handle which locks in the closed position when not in use. Convex lens for generating as much light as possible. As long as the handle is constantly operated, the generator gives off about as much light as a match or small candle. Still works well. No markings that I can find.

WWI RFC map/knee board modified for WWII navigation use.

1913 dated rolling map board, made by Houghton and used by Royal Flying Corps observers and also by Royal Artillery spotters, modified by attaching a Mk IIID navigational computer, complete with its notebook. Beautiful wooden scrolling map board, with working compass (minor split to wood around compass from drying out but board is still rock solid). Leather strap and buckle for attaching to the longer strap to wear around the thigh if needed. The ICAN MkIIID computer is hinged at the base, enabling it to lift up to install a map or chart to the rollers while still accessing the notepad inside. This modification was done a long time ago because the wood around the computer shows age darkening. Name "Stubbs" inked to board. A very clever use of an older item combined with what was, in 1943, state-of-the-art for navigators.

RAF aircrew issue large torch with fish-eye lens, in good working order.

Another scarce accessory carried by aircrew on all heavy bombers and reconnaissance aircraft. This is the larger version of the aircrew torch and is fitted with a fish-eye or hemispherical lens to diffuse the light over a wider area. Polished, nicek-plated brass metal shows some wear to finish and a few dings and dents but accepts batteries (2 x D types) and works perfectly. The lens has a few chips around the edge but these are not significant and do not affect its function (they can really only be seen if the torch is disassembled). Manufactured by EverReady and well marked with A-crown-M and stores ref. number indicating aircrew use. The larger torches don't sow up very often.

RAF aircrew headlamp for aircraft inspection and repairs.

Used by aircrew while in flight as well as ground crew, this small torch with a diffuser lens was worn around the head by means of the elastic headband,  connected to a battery pack which clipped to the flying suit. In excellent condition - though I have not been able to install a battery for testing. The battery housing is maker marked "Oldham" along with the A-crown-M and a stores ref. number. The headband is also stamped with A-crown-M and ref. number. Another scarce accessory, great for a flight engineer or other crew position display.

A good pair of RAF issue binoculars as used by air observers in all aircraft types. Retain about 80% of blackened finish to brass; good optics and crisp Air Ministry mark plus stores ref. no. Lacking strap but these were often removed because they would flap in the wind and could get snagged on the interior of the aircraft.

RAF aircrew "Goolie" chit (blood chit) for flights over Russian held territory in WWII.

Scarce and excellent example of the "goolie" chit (blood chit) carried by ARF aircrews flying over the USSR  and Russian held territory during WWII. The RAF flew shuttle missions and ferried aircraft to the Soviet Air Force and were always in danger of being shot down. This chit carried the standard message "I am an English soldier and your friend, please take good care of me and you will be rewarded by my government..." - Two versions were made, one printed on paper and one silk screened into artificial silk. This is the silk example in excellent condition and still contained in its celluloid envelope with cotton lanyard attached. Very rare to find complete and in such great condition.

RAF / AAF / SOE Maps Only purse containing double sided map 43C and 43D (Europe).

Aircrews flying over enemy occupied territory were issued with sealed waterproof "purses" containing silk or rayon maps, escape aids like a compass and hacksaw blade and, in some cases, currency. If no currency was contained, they were labeled "Maps Only" as this example. This purse is in excellent condition and contains and unused (still crisply folded) sheet with 43C on one side and 43D on the other, covering most of German occupied Europe. the map was used for evading capture in order to get back to Allied lines. Difficult to find, especially in this condition.

RAF1941 pattern Mae West complete with good stole/bladder — possibly FAA issue.

Popularly known as "1941 Pattern Mae West" but more correctly, "Life Saving Waistcoat, Stole-Inflated." Yellow cotton vest fastens with 3 buttons plus tie tapes at the chest, waist and thighs. Fitted with original, inflatable stole, grab handles, dye pouch (with remnants of red thread), and pocket for skull cap. It also has  early style wooden toggle and rope and scarce "female" connector for the dinghy pack. The pocket for the floating torch has been removed, suggesting Fleet Air Arm use — Navy aircrews frequently removed the pocket in favour of using the smaller Easco single-battery red light instead. Couple of small tears where the pocket was removed but nothing major and could easily be fixed if desired. Pocket was obviously

removed at the time of issue because vest shows even wear/discolouration. Stole is still flexible, broad arrow marked and dated 12/44. Excellent, clean example.

Rare Japanese Army Air Force flying gloves.

Fantastic pair of extremely rare Japanese Army Air Force flying gloves, made of soft brown suede, with knit wool linings and trimmed with rabbit fur. Each glove is well marked with nice crisp stamping and has a leather thing tightening strap.  These show very light wear, and there is a tiny split on the left hand index finger, and a very small seam separation on the middle finger. Very hard to find and a more beautiful example.

Exceptional matching pair of RAF 1933 Pattern Flying Gloves.

RAF flying gloves rarely come in matching pairs because left and right gloves were produced in different factories in order to discourage theft. This a very rare opportunity to own a pair that is perfectly matched, suggesting a very early production run. Both are the same size (9), have identical markings, identical zips and pullers, identical patterns and a virtually perfect colour match – they are also in superb condition, showing no wear or use, just a little verdigris from storage. The classic "straight zip" Battle of Britain flying gloves.

These are extremely hard to come by! Mounted on a pole attached to the bonnet of a staff car when transporting the AOC or base commander. Multiple layers of wool with a detailed, embroidered Astral Crown superimposed over the RAF roundel on a sky-blue wool background. Double-sided with a sleeve at one end for the flag pole. Excellent condition with some very minor mothing on the thin outer grey circle of the roundel. RARE RAF / SOE escape map 43G/H issued only in the EUR (white lettering) escape purse.

In perfect, unissued (and never unfolded except for photography today) condition. The 43 series escape maps were printed by John Waddingtons on artificial silk and while many were printed in large quantities, the G and H was produced in very low numbers and issued only in the EUR (white) escape purses. It is one of the hardest maps to find, largely because the escape route was deep into Eastern Europe, rather than the preferred way out through Switzerland or Spain.

RAF engraved copper tankard, measuring one Gill  which equals 5oz or 1/4 of an Imperial pint.

Copper tankard, measuring one Gill (pronounced "Jill" like the girl's name) which equals 5oz or 1/4 of an Imperial pint. A Gill was a popular measurement for buying strong ales and ciders etc. though not used much these days. Tankard is engraved: "Royal Air Force, Melsbrouck—Brussels, January the 1st, 1945." Melsbrouck was built by the Germans during their occupation and taken over by the RAF and RCAF after D-Day, but hit hard by the Luftwaffe late in 1944 in operation Bodenplatte. It is still the site of Belgium's national airport. Well made and very sturdy, with no dings or dents and well worth researching!

Wartime production RAF Mk VIII flying goggles.

Excellent pair of RAF Mk VIII flying goggles which are certainly wartime production (1943) because they have a faint but visible A-crown-M Air Ministry stamp on the leather behind the bridge. They also conform in every other aspect to wartime production: rolled frame edges, high, squared shoulders on the pads. The clear lenses are a later replacement  with unpainted frame holders, but are correct and show no signs of delamination. The goggles appear to be unissued or at least unused and the frames retain 100% of their grey painted finish. The strap still has elasticity. A lovely example.

Very good pair of Mk VIII goggles showing all the features of wartime production: rolled edge to the frames, high padded shoulders, separate cushions and what appears to be a faint A-crown-M emboss to the leather behind the bridge. RAF Mk 4A flying helmet with dual visors for helicopter pilot.

Very good example of the 1980s vintage RAF Mk 4A "bone dome" flying helmet, complete with radio receivers, cord and plug. Attachment point for boom microphone on left hand side - no microphone fitted and no fittings for attaching an oxygen mask. Dark green finish and superb dual visor system in place. Well marked inside with labels indicating nomenclature and manufacturer: Helmets Ltd. Reflective tape cross  on top/back of helmet and subdued Union jack patch Velcroed to nape. Minor scratches to visors otherwise an excellent helmet.

USN aircraft Oxygen Mask Stowage Case, named.

Green canvas stowage bag, 10.5" x 3.5", semi-circular with 3 lift-the-dot snaps/press studs for mounting inside the aircraft cabin/cockpit to store the oxygen mask when not in use. Shows use but no wear or damage and is named to "F.J. Bernstein VP-29 Crew". VP-29 was a patrol squadron established in 1948 and disbanded in 1950, though

operational under other designations since 1935 (so this bag may well have been in use earlier). Navy aircraft kit is quite scarce.

British Army Microphone Respirator No. 2 - used by Army Co-operation pilots attached to RAF Type D oxygen masks.

Manufactured by Siemens (a German electronics company!), these small microphones were intended to fit inside the standard issue gas-mask, but were also used by British Army pilots flying Lysanders, etc. fitted to the Type D microphone and used as a microphone carrier (see last two photos). RAF Type E* oxygen mask, complete with hose and Type 26 microphone assembly.

Scarce original RAF Type E* (E-star) oxygen mask in unissued condition, fitted with its correct, original, narrow gauge tube/hose with bayonet connector and clip, and a full length wiring loom (Type 26 microphone assembly) including the receivers and bell plug. While this mask looks amazing (and it is, actually) the rubber has stiffened up somewhat - though fortunately it is in no way misshapen or deformed and fits a display head perfectly. The chamois face protector is clean and soft. In spite of the rubber being stiff, the mask displays very well indeed. Priced according to condition, so quite a bargain!

RAF Type G oxygen mask fitted with full length Type 28 microphone assembly / external wiring loom, receivers and plug.

An outstanding example of the RAF Type G oxygen mask, made from grey-green rubber and fitted with a Type 28 (carbon) microphone assembly including full length Type Q cord, Type 32 receivers and bell plug. This set is in excellent overall condition. The mask has no evidence of wear or damage, no cracks, not even around the nosewire lugs or inspiation valve, flexible rubber, a good webbing harness retaining its elasticity and clean suede lining. It is slightly grubby on the outside from storage and the cord shows minor stains in a couple of places but is overall very good. Mask harness is fitted with the early "flat-figure-8" hook. G masks in this kind of condition rarely turn up any more!

RAF oxygen hose, WWII pattern, for the Type G or H oxygen mask.

Superb late WWII corrugated breathing tube for the Types G and H oxygen mask. Black rubber tubing has none of th usual cracking between corrugations and is fitted with the Mk IV connector (Air Ministry marked both on the brass connector AND on the clip). Plastic screw-in connector at the mask end has one very tiny chip - but this does not affect it's function. If you need one, this is a great example.

Royal Flying Corps Cowl type, fur-lined leather flying helmet in excellent condition.

Superb example of the iconic RFC cowl type hooded flying helmet. Butter soft leather with a chamois lining around the chin/neck and inside the crown, with a fur lining around the head. Cord tightens the facial opening and is secured by the leather chin strap and buckle. Trapezoid ear flaps and padded leather cylinders for wind deflection and narrow straps tighten the forehead. Crisp, clear War Dept, broad arrow marking inside. Best of all it retains 90% of its fur - most of these helmets found today have the fur rubbed or moulted away. An absolute stunner with shows light use and a couple of minor marks on the front, but very hard to find better.

Early WWI Royal Flying Corps goggle mask.

The perfect companion for the Cowl helmet shown above: this early goggle mask features oval laminated glass lenses in alloy frames with a chenille trimmed, velvet lined suede mask and elastic strap which still has some stretch. While definitely showing use, the goggle mask remains in good condition, it's maleable wire frame still intscat and able to be bent to fit tightly. Lenses are good and leather mask is very good. The cotton knit surrounds have split, one side showing an old repair, the other side remains torn but still functional. The chenille trim shows some loss at lower edge but overall, for a pair of goggles dating to around 1914, these display remarkably well. Clasp on strap marked JKO Co.

RAF WWII grouping of photo, letter and badges named to Spitfire pilot KIA in Malta.

Sad and poignant reminder of the true cost of war. This small grouping, which came directly from the family of the bereaved sweetheart, comprises a superb studio portrait of the pilot, Flt. Lieutenant John Douglas Keynes, 7.5" x 6" mounted on 8" x 10" card, with now detached paper cover; together with a letter from him to his sweetheart, written just a few days before he was killed in combat flying a Spitfire IX. Also included is his pilot wing and cap badge, and another unknown wings badge (perhaps an unofficial Maltese badge, or from a private flying club). A lovely piece of history worthy of further research.

Extremely rare tropical RAF headgear ensemble comprising Type E first pattern (unwired) helmet together with Type E oxygen mask.

A combination of two of the most difficult to find items of RAF headgear: first pattern (unwired) Type E flying helmet; Aertex construction with leather chin strap, Bennett buckle, fore-and-aft goggle strap tabs and press stud/snap fasteners for Types D, E, E* and G oxygen mask. Chamois donut pads and felt lined brow. Felt has been trimmed off the chin flap which is stamped with the A-crown-M Air Ministry mark. Very good condition with very little wear and no damage. Rubber ear cups are nice and pliable. Helmet is fitted with a lovely and extremely rare early Type E oxygen mask; black rubber is in excellent condition showing light use but no hardening or damage, just one tiny split at the nose, likely from storage. Chamois edging is a bit grubby. Leather straps and Bennett buckle, good Type 26 microphone assembly including Q cord (external wiring loom), Type 32 receivers and bell plug. There are a couple of worn spots on the cord but these do not detract - the microphone has wear to the paint at the edge. Mask is fitted with correct narrow tube (hose) with clip. A truly fantastic headgear ensemble for the advanced collector.

RAF headset comprising Type C headband, fully wired with RCAF Type C-3 receivers, cord and plug.

Worn as an alternative to a flying helmet in many larger aircraft, especially long range patrol aircraft such as the Sunderland, Catalina, Liberator and other bombers. The Type C headband was considerably more comfortable than a helmet over long periods of time. This example is fitted with Canadian-made C-3 receivers (same as RAF Type 16) and wired with the correct loom and plug for listening to Morse code. Also worn by WAAFs in the ops room and students in Link trainers. Excellent condition, shows virtually no wear. Nice AM markings moulded into each rubber component.

Scarce RAF 1941 Pattern Mae West Survival Backpack (Tropical).

Prior to the development of the Beadon suit, with its built-in pockets and compartments for survival items, survival equipment was carried in a back pack which was lightly stitched to the back of the yellow 1941 Pattern life vest. Two versions existed: one for Arctic survival, the other for tropical survival. This pack is the latter, constructed of oiled cotton; yellow on one side and green on the other (yellow for visibility and green for camouflage, as appropriate) with carrying handles and a waist strap, and numerous internal pockets for the various items (last photo shows an illustrated list). The pack is scarce and this example, while slightly grubby from use, is in very good condition, with both zips in good working order, all snaps/studs present and all pockets intact. It is stenciled "100" and named to Flt. Lt. J. Ault 24(C) Squadron. Pack also bears the AID acceptance mark. Waist strap remains stitched with red thread as issued. A lovely used example.

WWI—1920s Triplex flying goggles.

An unusual and well-made pair of early flying goggles of American manufacture but using British Triplex lenses made under license. The lenses are typical Triplex design - laminated glass (showing minor signs of delamination) but fitted in nickel plated frames with green cotton surrounds and faux fur trim. Long elastic strap has lost its elasticity, but overall a very nice and unusual set of goggles, perfect for a Great War or 1920s display.
