AAF aircraft-mounted oxygen stowage case with box for A-14 mask.

This OD green canvas case is fitted to the issue box for an A-14 mask (box and card insert included but no mask). Closure with standard snap fasteners and it mounts to the interior of the cabin or cockpit by means of two lift-the-dot fasteners.

USN issue MkII Pilot flying goggles.
Very nice example of these early wartime USN and USMC flying goggles made by Chas Fischer Spring (and so marked under the left hand frame). Slight grubby but very good condition. the rubber cushion is soft and pliable with no damage; just overall grubby and with some very minor surface creases/spider cracks but no indication of perishing. RAF Type B helmet, size 3 Frank Bryan, 1939.
Just about the cleanest Type B helmet I have ever handled! Leather is absolutely superb, chamois lining is clean and shows minimal use. Named inside to Renwick together with nice clear AID ink stamp; good 1939 dated Frank Bryan label indicating size 3 (large); Bennett buckles retain leather covering; zips work smoothly and retain leather pulls; soft rubber telephone holders inside ear cups. Wartime production RCAF sponge pads have been added to keep the shape of the ear telephone receiver housings; chin strap retains metal v-shaped tip. An absolutely text-book example of a B type helmet - this one would be very difficult to upgrade.

British/RAF all-purpose waterproof fabric helmet.
This type of helmet was misidentified many years ago a "flight training helmet." These were issued to all branches of the British military and primarily used by Motor Cycle Despatch Riders (Army, RAF and RN). That said, they did find other uses and may have been used for flying: I have seen at least one example photographed being worn by VIP guests at an aircraft testing facility for joyriding. I have also owned examples which were ink-stamped "Property of Handley Page", "Property of De Havilland Aircraft" etc. Made from the same waterproof heavy cotton drill fabric as the Type B oxygen mask and Type E microphone mask, and lined with blanket wool, stamped with a WD broad arrow mark and code. Very good condition, with some spotting inside (from storage) and slightly stiff from the waterproof coating. There is one small tear in the chin strap which does not affect display. Add the MT goggles (listed below) to complete a good display.

SCARCE 1944 dated WAAF KD Bush Jacket and near matching trousers.
This set comprises a WAAF (Women's Auxiliary Air Force) Bush jacket, together with a near matching pair of KD trousers, both items dated 1944 and both in very good condition showing only very light wear. The jacket includes its detachable belt and is fitted with tropical style shoulder eagles (red embroidered on khaki) and standard RAF brass buttons. The trousers are actually men's 1942 pattern but were possibly issued to the same WAAF since they appear to have been altered by adding darts to the waist at the back (as well as the front). They came together, are approximately the same size and show the same degree of wear. As far as I can determine, less than 600 WAAFs served in the Middle East and just over 700 in the Far East (supporting the SOE) in WWII – so this is a VERY SCARCE WAAF uniform and worthy of inclusion in any RAF or WAAF collection.

RARE pair of modified RAF "short loop" Mk IVB goggles, Battle of Britain, with flip-up sun screen.
One of the rarest variants of Mk IV series, these "short loop" goggles were modified specifically to Air Ministry specifications (see images) to make the wearing easier – specifically to be able to move them up to the forehead and down over the face as needed. Condition is very good, the frames, lenses and strap all in excellent condition - as is normally the case, the sponge cushions have hardened and broken slightly. Best of all, the goggles are fitted with the rare "exposed spring" type flip up polarizing screen, adjustable to any position. In 30 years this is only third or fourth pair I have come across, and they are a lovely example.

WWII USSR late war flying goggles.
Cheaply made flying goggles, patterned after the Luftwaffe Model 306 with large lenses, separate rubber cushions and simple strap. The frames are unpainted lightweight alloy, joined together with chain links and sewn to low quality rubber cushions, with an adjustable silken elastic strap. The rubber has deteriorated but remains somewhat pliable. Though the cushions are crispy on some of the edges, they are not sticky and these can certainly be displayed with a helmet. Lenses are lightweight plastic/acetate with some scratching evident. While not in the best of condition, Soviet flying kit is extremely rare and these goggles serve their purpose well.

REPRODUCTION AAF / USN AN6530 flying goggles in brand new/unused condition.
Produced by (I believe) Avirex, in the 1990s and early 2000s, these excellent reproductions are no longer made and have almost become collectible in their own right! The frames and one piece rubber cushion are a near perfect copy of the originals, and they feature the white elastic strap. The acryllic lenses are slightly convex and much safer than than the original glass (though I am sure original lenses could be installed if desired). Perfect for re-enactors or to fill a hole in a display.
4 pairs available. When they are gone they are gone - there will be no more.

RAF tropical issue skull cap as issued with the mae west for visibility and sun protection.
The slightly more scarce variation of the skull cap as issued with early examples of the yellow, stole-inflated life-saving waistcoat (commonly referred to as 1941 Pattern Mae West). This example id made from linen dyed bright yellow with khaki tie tapes and a neck flap/extension for added protection from the sun. These were carried in the small breast pocket of the Mae West and served the dual purpose to airmen in the sea of aiding in visibility for rescue, and protection from the sun. Marking are present but indistinct. Condition is very good.

RAF Bomber crew waistbelt with pockets for chemically-heated "Everhot" pads.
Most probably made by a RAF ground crew rigger for an air gunner or similar crew position on a RAF heavy bomber. The waterproof (rubberized) silk pouches were issued to be used with "Everhot" chemical heating pads and could be tucked inside gloves, boots or, in this case, attached to a belt and worn under the flying suit or jacket for supplemental warmth. Pouches are nicely air ministry marked and sewn to a white webbing belt. Very good condition and not commonly found. "Everhot" pouches are not included.

Fantastic prototype A-11 flying helmet produced by I. Miller.
It doesn't get much better than this! Helmet appears to be a preproduction prototype of what would become the classic A-11 flying helmet of the USAAF from 1943 on. Beautifully made from soft cape leather and fitted with hard rubber noise-attenuating ear cups containing a Western Electric HS-38 headset. The hard rubber has been overpainted white and the initial "J" painted on each receiver (probably for ID). The helmet has several features not incorporated into the final design: an elasticated back (like the A-11A) instead of the narrow strap and buckle (rear of helmet has been cinched for a snug fit); leather reinforcements around the rear snap fasteners; and most interesting of all, it is fitted with a British style Bennetts Buckle release tab (as found on RAF B and early C Type helmets). On the left hand side of the interior is a manufacturer's label to I. Miller Sons with the notation "Reg. U.S. Patent Office"; a smaller label on the opposite interior indicates size Medium. Excellent, gently worn condition. A rare and very possibly unique variant of this classic helmet.

Perfect, unissued A-14 oxygen mask in original box, with all accessories, still in cellophane wrapping.
Absolutely immaculate A-14 oxygen mask, size Large, still in its original issue/storage box and wrapped in cellophane, with the envelope containing instructions and accessories. Curiously, neither the box label, nor the mask itself, are dated, but the box label indicates a wartime USN contract. Mask appears to have never been issued or worn; the rubber is clean and flexible, in perfect condition, as are all fittings, bar some minor surface oxidation to the snaps. This one would be extremely difficult to upgrade.

RARE RAF Pilot's Notes for the De Havilland Hornet fighter.
The De Havilland Hornet was the direct descendant of the famed "Wooden wonder" Mosquito, and though it was designed in WWII and first flew in July 1944, it not enter service until 1946. It had a successful service life with the RAF and Fleet Air Arm (as the Sea Hornet). RAF Pilot's Notes are rare and highly sought after. This manual is early post-war, dated December 1947 and includes the usual array of information and diagrams, including photos of the cockpit layout and controls. Overall very good condition with some wear to cover. A very rare AP notes/booklet.

Lovely example of a standard issue soft leather flying helmet of the Imperial German Air Service, 1914-1918.
Very good, used (but undamaged) soft leathet, blanket lined flying helmet or cap as worn by the majority of pilots and aircrews of the Imperial German Air Service in WWI. Such notables as Von Richtofen and Balke are often pictured wearing this exact pattern. Black leather with a tan blanket lining and featuring a neck cape which tucked into the flying coat. The strap at the top of the crown was often used to tie a scarf or ribbon for identification while flying in combat.

Rare WWI era French hard shell motorcycle/
motoring/flying helmet together with goggles.
Officers of the French Army Aviation Escadrilles, much like the Royal Flying Corps, were required to supply their own equipment in the early days of the war. Since flying essentially required the same type of protection as motoring and motorcycling, manufacturers and retail outlets were quick to rebrand motoring helmets and goggles for this new generation of flyers. This is a classic example, probably dating from 1914-15 comprising. a black leather covered helmet with a protective hard shell interior, soft padded cheeks, a fsoft peak and flaps over the ears which could be rolled up for wind deflection and communication. The shell is actually broken into two pieces, front and back. but is held tightly together by the leather covering. It shows wear and use but displays perfectly and is complelemented by the accompanying folding goggles with angled glass lenses for excellent peripheral vision. Gpggles have a waterproof, oiled cloth mask and steel frames. Scarce helmet.

Late WWII US Navy issue "All Rubber Mask - Double Aperture Aviation Goggles" by Willson, with box.
This was the US Navy answer to the AAF B-8 goggles, supplied by their favourite contractor, Willson optical. In the end, they proved to be less popular than the B-8, which the USN eventually adopted instead. These are quite scarce by comparison and actually well made - they just don't offer the same field of vision as the B-8. Unissued condition, perfect soft and pliable rubber with chamois backing and green plastic one-piece lens.

WWI-1920s Italian flying goggles by CIGLUS.
Very good pair of early Italian made flying goggles, as used by Italian aviators in WWI, but also very likely worn by French and German pilots as well. The style remained popular throughout the war and into the 1920s, and was copied by manufacturers all over the world. This pair is in very good condition, with plated alloy frames, pneumatic, orange rubber cushions which remain soft and pliable, celluloid lenses and a good elastic strap. The lenses are very slightly warped but undamaged. Well marked on the frames: CIGLUS Déposé and Made in Italy.

Aviator's cold weather face mask 1920s-30s.
Very well made cold weather face mask which was intended for wear under a flying helmet and goggles, and may have been used in conjunction with a pipe-stem oxygen breathing tube. It most likely dates from the 1920s or early 1930s – and I believe this type might have had military applications but that the AAF stamp is a later addition and erroneous. However, it is a nice example in excellent condition and will display well with either commercial or military issue headgear to represent the "Golden Age" of flying.

RARE WWII USSR fur-lined winter flying boots.
Russian flying kit from WWII is extremely difficult to source, and this is a superb pair of fur-lined winter flying boots for a Russian aviator. Just over the knee, these are reminiscent of RFC fug boots, but made from heavy black fleece with a soft white fur/fleece lining. The shoe section is black leather and the soles are made from thick pressed wool felt. Straps around the foot and calf help keep the boots on in the event of jumping out of the aircraft, and long webbing ties on each boot presumably secure them to the flying suit or trousers. There are a couple of numbers hand-inked on the webbing tapes as shown in the pictures. A very rare pair of flying boots in excellent condition.

RAF Pathfinder eagle in silver.
I've seen a few of these over the years. Looks exactly like a RAF cap eagle (or Pathfinder badge), 2.25" across, but struck in silver and marked as such on the back. Lovely surface detail and feathering and pin-back fastening. I have always assumed it's a sweetheart brooch but I'm starting to wonder if some Pathfinder aircrews had them made by jewellers for official/unofficial wear on their service dress uniforms? Either way, a lovely item.
